After reading that (and after about 1,000 hours of coaching with Super Coach Brooke Castillo), I knew life was too short to be spending it promoting backup software or contact management databases. I needed to join the Peace Army and get on with the business of changing the world. And so do you.

For me, playing big means attracting coaches with a message of hope and healing who are ready to write a book that will have a lasting impact on the planet. Having spent so much time trapped in deep pain, shame, and blame, books were my salvation—the key to my journey to freedom. (By the way, it’s that journey after which my publishing company is named.)

Best Selling Author, David Wise

When I first stepped into the world of books, I was a senior in college. I majored in journalism at The George Washington University and was recommended by one of my professors to work for a world-class investigative journalist, David Wise, who had over a dozen books to his credit, including a #1 New York Times bestseller. During my tenure with him, I helped him research and edit two books, one long-form Vanity Fair article, and many smaller pieces. I helped organize and manage his book tour, publicity, and other book marketing. In my time with him, I got to see how the big-time publishing houses and publicists conceive of book ideas, research, write, edit, fact-check, produce, and promote books.

While working with David Wise, I was simultaneously consulting for major newspapers like USA Today and The Washington Post on how to convert their newspapers to the Internet. I was a desk jockey at a local newspaper chain called the Montgomery Gazette. And I was the editor of The World Almanac of US Politics with a staff of 10 researchers on Capitol Hill. In my spare time, I helped a Clinton White House staffer write and edit his memoir, Aboard Airforce One (Fifthian Press), and I co-wrote, researched, and edited over a dozen books with Pulitzer Prize runner-up and nationally syndicated columnist Robert Wagman.

After getting a Master’s degree in Media Affairs from The George Washington University and a PhD in Communications from The European Graduate School in Switzerland, I began writing books, special reports, website content, brochures, blogs, and other content for high-tech companies. Writing a book is like having a baby. There’s NEVER a “good” time. You just have to bite the bullet!

I know from working with struggling coaches that you’ve got great ideas for books—and yet they aren’t getting done. I hear all the swooning about other coaches who have finished a book (or two, or more) and all the “compare and despair” that goes with it. But the simple reason more coaches haven’t finished their books has nothing to do with lack of ideas, or writing talent, or even time (though that’s a handy excuse.) The reason coaches aren’t writing their book is they don’t commit.

I’m going to say that again because I’m betting you skimmed over that.


Of course, you want to write it, but wanting is not enough! You need to have a system to get feedback from potential readers, settle on a topic, build an outline, complete a first draft, hire an editor, make the changes, develop a book proposal, pitch agents, find a publisher, and market your completed book. No wonder you haven’t done it—it’s a big project and it’s incredibly hard to do alone! It’s like trying to lose 100 pounds in one go.

With a project this big, it’s difficult to stay out of your own way. The most successful authors have writing coaches, a well-vetted plan, and a means of staying accountable. For many the advance money from the publisher provides great accountability—who wants to pay back a $10,000 or $20,000 advance? But what if you are self-publishing or working with an author-funded publisher; how do you stay accountable then?

 I don’t have time to write a book. Don’t worry. As a book coach, I’ve helped even the busiest people find ways to make time in their schedules.  I’m not a good enough writer. You wouldn’t want to write a book if you didn’t have something valuable to say. Many self-professed “non-writers” write bestsellers. The author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad admits he’s a terrible writer and yet his book has changed millions of lives. I started helping people write books in 1994. That’s a long time! And you better believe I’ve learned quite a few tricks to help bad writers write good books. That said, it’s very possible you are a good writer with bad systems. I can help you fix that, too, by teaching you several effective techniques for compelling, entertaining writing that best-selling non-fiction authors know.  
 I’m just not ready. I need to get my website done. I need to figure out my target market. I need to get on the other side of this training I’m doing. How long have you been saying you’re not ready? There will always be something you feel like you have to do before you can get to the book. Guess what? With that thinking, you’ll never get to it. There will never be a better time than now. What right did she have to write this book? Who could she help? How was she unique? It wasn’t far from the surface, that inner critic of hers. Everyone has one. And they won’t shut up, will they? But you don’t have to listen to your critic. You do have a book in you. It would be irresponsible to let your inner critic stop you from reaching your full potential and sharing your insights with readers. Trust yourself and have fun. Fire your critic.
